Trip Home - Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana
Steamboat Springs was lovely the day we left and I was in no hurry to get to the Hampton Inn in Hays, KS (population 20K+). So, we got loaded up, hit the dog park one last time and took off. The road south from Steamboat Springs has AMAZING vistas and views, but I never stopped to take a photo, much to my regret. By the time we got to Denver we were hungry and I was dreaming about the wonderful brunch we had with Joy the week before, so we decided to grab brunch, charge and head on. I knew it was supposed to start snowing, but wasn’t worried. I should have been, though. By the time we got to Snooze, waited for a table, ate, got to a charger and then hit the road, it was 4:30 pm and starting to really snow - and ICE! Pretty quickly I was driving an ice cube on 4 wheels! I had to keep stopping to scrape the windshield wipers because they kept freezing up. We would just about get ahead of the storm, but as soon as we stopped (to charge, to pee, etc.) it would catch up to us and we’d be driving in it again. Once you get in eastern CO and western KS, there is NOTHING but windmills and grasslands. I remember by about 9 pm it was pitch black, there were literally no other cars on the interstate, it’s still snowing/sleeting/icing and I don’t see any headlights in my rear-view mirror, or tail lights in front of me! It was quite nerve-wracking. We got to the Hampton Inn, though, and luckily the charger was right by the back door. We plugged in, grabbed a bag and Tiko’s bed and used the digital room key to go straight to our room - exhausted!
The next morning it was much better and we were headed to Kingdom City, MO (population 128). There was a charger at the hotel, but the drive was nice and we had a little more company on the road!
Almost home, but one important stop left. It seems like every trip out west, we end up coming home across I-70. So, every time we always stop and see Julie and Jeff in Paris, IL. This time, though, they graciously offered to buy us dinner at the Longhorn Steakhouse in Terre Haute, IN. We met them about 6 pm and didn’t get back on the road until almost 9 pm! We LOVE them and had so much to catch up on, we just couldn’t leave!
